The Stand

Stephen King's The Stand is an epic post-apocalyptic novel that begins with a devastating plague. An accidental release of a weaponized influenza strain from a U.S. Army laboratory wipes out 99.4% of the world's population, leaving behind a scattered and broken humanity. As the survivors grapple with their new reality, they begin to experience shared dreams that pull them toward two opposing figures. King started writing The Stand in February 1975, envisioning a story on the scale of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. The original 1978 publication by Doubleday was an abridged version, with around 400 pages removed due to concerns about its length and marketability. In 1990, King released The Stand: The Complete & Uncut Edition. This expanded version restored over 300 pages of excised material and updated the story's setting from 1980 to 1990, incorporating contemporary cultural references. This uncut edition totals 1,152 pages, making it King's longest standalone work.

The novel is a complex tapestry weaving together themes of good versus evil, faith, morality, and the consequences of humanity's technological advancements. It delves into the rebuilding of society from the ground up, exploring leadership, governance, and spirituality in a world stripped bare.
