    Overview

Blake Lively carries nearly every frame of The Shallows as Nancy Adams, a medical student who paddles out to a hidden Mexican beach her mother once surfed. A great white shark turns the idyllic cove into a trap. She is stranded 200 yards from shore with a wounded leg, a rock outcrop, and a ticking clock. Director Jaume Collet-Serra, working from Anthony Jaswinski's script, keeps the scale intimate: one woman, one shark, and a whole lot of water. The film cost $17 million and pulled in $119.1 million worldwide, a return that made it one of the summer of 2016's smarter bets. Collet-Serra mixes survival-thriller tension with horror beats, and the PG-13 rating keeps the gore suggestive rather than explicit. Critics and audiences landed in roughly the same place, with a 6.3/10 average across more than 5,400 votes. Lively's physical performance and the film's lean 86-minute runtime do most of the heavy lifting. It is not a franchise starter, but it is a clean, self-contained genre exercise with a single, sharp hook.

Nancy Adams (Blake Lively) is a medical student reeling from the death of her mother, who died of cancer. Seeking solace and a connection to her mother's past, she travels to a remote, hidden beach on the coast of Mexico, a spot her mother surfed years earlier and described in a journal. The location is reachable only by a rough hike through jungle, and Nancy arrives with a local driver (Óscar Jaenada as Carlos) who warns her about the isolated cove but leaves her to her day. She paddles out alone, savors a few waves, and briefly shares the water with two local surfers (Angelo Josue Lozano Corzo and José Manuel Trujillo Salas).

The idyll collapses when Nancy is attacked by a massive great white shark. She is bitten badly on the leg and barely makes it to a small rock outcrop roughly 200 yards from shore, the shallows of the title, where the shark can still hunt. The bulk of the film is a taut, almost real-time contest of wills: Nancy, wounded and bleeding, must manage her injury, fend off hypothermia and the rising tide, and outthink a predator that circles relentlessly. Her only company is a wounded seagull she names Steven Seagull, and her only tools are her wits, a surfboard, a GoPro-style camera, and jewelry she improvises into a makeshift tourniquet and later a weapon. She spots a buoy and a distant boat, weighs desperate swims against the certainty of the shark's patrol, and endures a night of exposure. The film's central conflict is not just woman versus shark but Nancy versus grief, the ocean becomes a crucible in which she confronts her mother's death and her own will to live. Collet-Serra keeps the frame intimate and the tension almost unbroken, with the PG-13 rating making the violence suggestive rather than graphic. The story stops short of revealing how Nancy's final gambit plays out.
