The Saga of Tanya the Evil

Carlo Zen's The Saga of Tanya the Evil (originally Yōjo Senki) takes the isekai genre to a darkly satirical place. The story follows a cynical Japanese salaryman who, after being killed in a workplace accident, finds himself reincarnated as a young orphan girl in an alternate version of World War I. But this world has magic, and the child, now named Tanya Degurechaff, is conscripted into the Imperial Army's mage corps. Her only goal is to survive long enough to die of old age, a plan that drives her to become a ruthlessly efficient soldier. The series began online in 2010 on Arcadia, before Enterbrain picked it up in October 2013. By September 2023, fourteen volumes had been published. Shinobu Shinotsuki provides the illustrations. A manga adaptation by Chika Tōjō started in Kadokawa Shoten's Comp Ace in April 2016.

Tanya is no typical hero. She adopts a bloodthirsty, sadistic persona on the battlefield, all in service of a coldly rational calculation: rise through the ranks and become so formidable that no one will dare kill her. This puts her in constant conflict with her superiors, especially Being X, a mysterious entity she blames for her predicament. The novels blend military strategy, dark humor, and philosophical musings on faith, war, and human nature. The anime adaptation by NUT aired from January to March 2017, followed by a theatrical film in February 2019. A second season is scheduled for July 2026. With its antihero protagonist and unflinching war setting, the series has carved a unique niche among light novels. [edit]
