The Ryuo's Work is Never Done!

When sixteen-year-old Yaichi Kuzuryu becomes the youngest shogi player ever to claim the Ryuo title, he expects a life of intense matches and quiet study. Instead, a nine-year-old girl named Ai Hinatsuru shows up at his door, begging to become his disciple. She fell in love with shogi watching him play and is determined to turn pro herself. Yaichi reluctantly takes her in as a live-in apprentice, and their daily life unfolds: shogi drills, school homework, cooking battles, and the strange rituals of the professional shogi world.

The series, written by actual shogi professional Shirō Shiratori, offers an insider's look at the sport. Tournament scenes carry real tension and psychological depth, while the comedy comes from the clash between a teenage prodigy and a child who refuses to lose. Yaichi struggles to defend his title against rivals like the stoic Ginko Sora, while Ai's rapid rise forces everyone to take her seriously. The story balances high-stakes competition with warm, awkward moments of mentorship.

Published by GA Bunko, the light novel series ran 18 volumes from September 2015 to March 2025. It won the Grand Prize at the 3rd GA Bunko Award and sold over 1.5 million copies in Japan by 2022. A manga adaptation and a 12-episode anime by Project No.9 followed, alongside a stage play in 2019. The series has been praised for its authentic shogi detail and criticized for occasional fanservice, but its core remains a sharp, funny story about teaching and learning at the highest level.[edit]
