“A dark, compelling isekai that subverts expectations with a protagonist who earns every bit of his growth. The bond between Naofumi and Raphtalia is the heart of the show.”

The Rising of the Shield Hero flips the isekai script. Instead of a power fantasy, it opens with betrayal. Naofumi Iwatani, voiced by Kaito Ishikawa, is an ordinary college student yanked into a fantasy world to fight the Waves of Catastrophe as one of four Cardinal Heroes. But when his party frames him for a crime he didn't commit, he loses everything: his money, his reputation, and his trust in people. Left with nothing but his shield, he buys a slave named Raphtalia (Asami Seto) and starts clawing his way back. The show, based on Aneko Yusagi's light novels, first aired on AT-X in January 2019 and has run for six seasons and 63 episodes, with the latest season concluding in September 2025. It blends action, drama, and a controversial take on slavery that sparked debate. The series has earned a strong 8.474 rating from over 1,500 viewers, who praise its dark tone, character growth, and the unlikely bond between Naofumi and Raphtalia. If you're tired of heroes who have it easy, this one fights for every win.

Naofumi Iwatani, a university student from modern-day Japan, is summoned to the kingdom of Melromarc alongside three other young men. They are the Four Cardinal Heroes, each wielding a legendary weapon: Sword, Spear, Bow, and Shield. Their mission: defend the kingdom against the Waves of Catastrophe, apocalyptic events that have ravaged the land for centuries. Naofumi gets the Shield, the most derided of the four. His weapon is purely defensive, and the kingdom's citizens mock him as useless. On his second day, his party member, Princess Myne, falsely accuses him of assault, stripping him of his money and reputation. He becomes an outcast in a world that despises him.
With nothing left, Naofumi adopts a cynical survival mentality. He purchases a demi-human slave, Raphtalia, a young tanuki girl, to fight alongside him. Over time, they form a deep, trusting bond. Raphtalia grows into a skilled swordswoman and fierce protector, while Naofumi gradually learns to trust again despite his trauma. They are later joined by Filo, a childlike creature who can transform into a giant bird-like mount. Together, they form an unconventional family unit.
The central conflict is twofold: Naofumi must survive the Waves while clearing his name and navigating Melromarc's corrupt politics. The Three Heroes Church actively plots against him, viewing the Shield Hero as a heretic. The other three Cardinal Heroes, Ren, Motoyasu, and Itsuki, are naive and easily manipulated, often working against Naofumi's interests despite their shared mission.
Season 1 (25 episodes, 2019) establishes the premise: betrayal, rise from rock bottom, and the church conspiracy, culminating in a major battle and Queen Mirelia restoring Naofumi's reputation. Season 2 (13 episodes, 2022) focuses on the Spirit Tortoise, a Guardian Beast that awakens, leading Naofumi to a new world and introducing Otherworld Heroes. Season 3 (12 episodes, 2023) follows Naofumi after the Spirit Tortoise's defeat, as he searches for the missing Cardinal Heroes. Season 4 (12 episodes, 2025) sees assassins from Q'ten Lo targeting Raphtalia, prompting a journey to Siltvelt and Q'ten Lo, where she becomes a revolutionary symbol.

Critical Consensus
The Rising of the Shield Hero is a divisive but commercially successful isekai that subverts genre conventions through its grim premise and anti-hero protagonist. Critics praise its strong animation, emotional core, and the compelling bond between Naofumi and Raphtalia, while criticizing its controversial handling of slavery themes and inconsistent pacing. It remains one of the most-watched anime of its era, shaped by debate as much as acclaim.
