The Queen of the Damned
Anne Rice
Overview
Anne Rice's The Queen of the Damned, published in 1988, is the third novel in her Vampire Chronicles series, following Interview with the Vampire and The Vampire Lestat. Picking up after the cliffhanger ending of the previous book, this 448-page story traces the vampire lineage back to ancient Egypt. Lestat de Lioncourt, now a rock star, plans a live concert in San Francisco where he openly admits to being a vampire, a move the public sees as a gimmick but that threatens the secret vampire world. Other vampires plot to ambush and dismember him at the concert. Meanwhile, a mortal woman named Jesse Reese, who suspects her aunt Maharet is a vampire, makes her way to the concert, only to be killed by an angry vampire and subsequently turned by Maharet.
That night, Akasha, the first vampire, awakens from 6,000 years of sleep. She appears at the concert, burns the vampires who came to harm Lestat, and takes him as her immortal lover. Akasha's plan is to kill all males on earth to usher in a reign of peace. The surviving vampires gather at Maharet's home in Sonoma to decide how to stop her. The novel builds to a confrontation where an ancient curse ultimately destroys Akasha, saving mortals and reuniting Lestat with his loved ones. Through Lestat's pursuit of fame and Akasha's ruthless vision, Rice explores themes of power, identity, and the consequences of unchecked ambition, while the bond between the ancient twin vampires Maharet and Mekare highlights the enduring ties of family and fate.
Critical reception was mixed. A Kirkus Reviews assessment noted that while there are winning new characters and some good scenes early on, they are offset by Maharet's long tale, told in a tone of mock-solemnity, the silliness of Akasha's plan, the sophomoric debate that accompanies it, and a deus-ex-machina defeat. A film adaptation, loosely based on the book, was released in 2002. The Interview with the Vampire television series is adapting the novel for its fourth season under the title Anne Rice's Queen of the Damned. In March 2014, Rice announced a new installment, Prince Lestat, which her son Christopher Rice described as a true sequel to The Queen of the Damned.
