    Overview

The Nun, directed by Corin Hardy, is the fifth film in The Conjuring Universe and a prequel spin-off exploring the origin of the demonic entity Valak. Set in 1952, the story begins when a young nun is found dead at a remote Romanian abbey, prompting the Vatican to send Father Burke and Sister Irene to investigate. Their arrival uncovers a malevolent force that has claimed the holy ground, forcing the pair to confront a demon that takes the form of a nun.

Taissa Farmiga brings a quiet intensity to Sister Irene, while Demián Bichir grounds the story as the skeptical yet vulnerable Father Burke. Bonnie Aarons reprises her unsettling role as Valak, a figure first glimpsed in The Conjuring 2. With a budget of $22 million, the film grossed over $366 million worldwide, becoming one of the highest-grossing entries in the franchise. While critics were largely dismissive, audiences embraced its gothic atmosphere and jump scares, cementing its status as a cult favorite in the horror genre.

In 1952, at the remote Abbey of St. Carta in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania, two nuns, Sister Victoria and Sister Oana, are making their way through the dark corridors when they hear a strange noise from a nearby tunnel. Sister Victoria investigates and encounters a terrifying presence, a demonic nun with pale, decaying features. She flees but is found dead the next morning, hanging from the abbey's outer wall. Sister Oana is found unconscious, in a state of catatonic shock.

The Vatican dispatches Father Burke, a priest haunted by a failed exorcism from his past, and Sister Irene, a novitiate on the verge of taking her final vows, to investigate. They travel to Romania, where they are met by Maurice Theriault, a charming French-Canadian farmer who works as a courier for the abbey. Upon arriving, they find the remaining nuns evasive about the circumstances of Sister Victoria's death.

The investigation reveals that the abbey was built on the ruins of a medieval castle belonging to a duke who practiced dark arts. The demon Valak, which takes the form of a nun, has been unleashed and is terrorizing the inhabitants. The abbey sits atop a portal to hell, a secret the nuns have been desperate to conceal. As Father Burke, Sister Irene, and Maurice dig deeper, they uncover a catacomb filled with bones, cryptic Latin inscriptions, and a relic known as the Blood of Christ, a vial containing what is believed to be the blood of Jesus, which has the power to repel the demon.

Their investigation is constantly interrupted by terrifying encounters with Valak, which manifests as a nun, a shadowy figure, and swarms of rats and insects. Father Burke's faith is tested as he confronts his past failures, while Sister Irene is forced to question her calling. Maurice, the pragmatic outsider, becomes an unlikely ally, using his resourcefulness to protect his companions. As the film progresses, it becomes clear that Valak seeks to break through the portal and unleash hell upon the world, and it requires a soul to do so. The trio must race against time to find a way to seal the portal and banish the demon before it's too late.

    Critical Consensus

The Nun received largely negative reviews from critics, who praised its atmospheric gothic visuals and Bonnie Aarons' terrifying performance as Valak, but criticized its reliance on jump scares, muddled plot, and failure to capitalize on its promising premise. The film was seen as a step down from the stronger entries in The Conjuring Universe, though audiences were considerably more forgiving, giving it a significantly higher audience score.
