    About

The Noel Redding Band continues to be remembered as a significant chapter in the post-Jimi Hendrix Experience musical landscape. Though active for only a few years, the group left behind two albums, Clonakilty Cowboys (1975) and Blowin' (1976), both released on RCA Records. These works showcased a blend of folk and rock influences, reflecting the band members' diverse musical backgrounds.

The band undertook several tours, performing in Holland, England, Ireland, and even a ten-week stint in America. Despite their efforts and the pedigree of its members, the band disbanded in 1978. Noel Redding himself passed away on May 11, 2003, but his contributions to music, both with The Jimi Hendrix Experience and The Noel Redding Band, remain a lasting legacy.

    Formation Story

Following the tragic passing of Jimi Hendrix in 1970, bassist Noel Redding found himself at a crossroads. While deeply associated with the iconic Jimi Hendrix Experience, he was eager to explore new musical avenues and establish his own identity as a bandleader. He eventually settled in Clonakilty, County Cork, Ireland, and in 1974, decided to form a new group. This endeavor led to the creation of The Noel Redding Band, initially drawing inspiration from its locale and adopting the moniker The Clonakilty Cowboys, which also lent its name to their debut album.

The band coalesced around Redding's vision, bringing together Dave Clarke, who provided vocals and keyboards, and the highly skilled guitarist Eric Bell, formerly of Thin Lizzy and Them. Completing the lineup was drummer Les Sampson, who had previously played with Road. This quartet possessed a wealth of experience and diverse influences, promising a unique sound for the new project. Their debut album, Clonakilty Cowboys, arrived in 1975, followed by their second and final album, Blowin', in 1976, both released under the RCA Records label.

    Musical Style

The Noel Redding Band operated firmly within the folk rock genre, a sound that naturally emerged from the combination of Noel Redding's bass-driven rock foundation and the more melodic, often acoustic-tinged influences brought by the other members. Their music featured a blend of straightforward rock arrangements with elements of folk storytelling and instrumentation, creating a sound that was accessible yet held a certain depth.

Lyrical themes often touched upon relatable experiences, drawing from the band's Irish setting and their journeys. The production, typical of the mid-1970s, was clean and direct, allowing the songwriting and musicianship to take center stage. While not overtly experimental, the band's style provided a comfortable space for Redding and Bell to showcase their guitar work and songwriting, offering a distinct contrast to the heavier, psychedelic sounds of Redding's previous band.
