Overview
Based on the 1994 Jim Carrey comedy, The Mask for the Super NES hands players the green-faced trickster's powers. Developed by Black Pearl Software and published in North America by the same studio in October 1995, this side-scrolling action game follows bank clerk Stanley Ipkiss as he dons the magical mask of Loki. Players run, jump, and punch through levels packed with cartoonish enemies and environmental hazards. A distinctive gameplay element is The Mask's ability to use his enormous living horn as a weapon to defeat enemies. The game tries to capture the film's slapstick humor with goofy animations and sound effects, while the levels are loosely tied to movie scenes like the nightclub and the docks.
Critics praised the faithful recreation of the movie's visual style and jokes, but many found the level design frustrating and the difficulty punishing. Community discussion on platforms like Instagram reveals that many players remember renting the game from Blockbuster Video during their childhood. Players have noted the game's difficulty, with some commenting that they never managed to beat it entirely. Comparisons have been drawn to Earthworm Jim in terms of visual style. The game is remembered with a mix of nostalgia and acknowledgment of its challenging nature, with one commenter noting it has the usual 90's video store hard vibes.
