The Marriage Plot

Madeleine Hanna walks across the Brown University campus in 1982 with a stack of Victorian novels and a plan to write her own happy ending. She believes life should mirror the structured arcs found in the works of Charlotte Brontë and George Eliot, where romantic pursuit inevitably leads to marriage and resolution. This expectation crumbles when she falls for Mitchell Grammaticus, a charismatic student whose charm masks a deepening instability, and when she experiences a manic episode that lands her a diagnosis of bipolar disorder.

The narrative shifts focus as Madeleine becomes entangled with Leonard Bankhead, a theology student whose rigid faith offers a stark contrast to Mitchell's chaos. The trio forms a love triangle that refuses to resolve into the conventional union expected by the genre. Instead of a tidy conclusion, the characters drift apart into adulthood, forced to confront how mental illness and intellectual idealism disrupt the stories we tell ourselves about our futures. [edit]
