In 1913, a poor clerk in Madras mailed a letter to Cambridge University that would change mathematics forever. Srinivasa Ramanujan, a self-taught Indian mathematician with no formal training, claimed to have solved problems that had stumped European scholars for centuries. His notebooks overflowed with thousands of theorems, many of them entirely original. When G. H. Hardy received that letter, he saw something he could not ignore: a spark of pure, untamed genius.
This film, directed by Matt Brown and based on Robert Kanigel's acclaimed biography, follows Ramanujan from his cramped office in colonial India to the hallowed halls of Trinity College. Dev Patel portrays the mathematician with a quiet intensity, capturing both his brilliance and his profound loneliness. Jeremy Irons plays Hardy, the atheist scholar who becomes Ramanujan's mentor and, ultimately, his friend. Their relationship, built on intellectual sparring and mutual respect, forms the emotional core of the story.
The production shot on location at Cambridge and in Chennai, with a mathematician on set to ensure the equations were accurate. Patel learned Tamil for the role, and the score blends Indian classical instruments with orchestral arrangements. The film does not shy away from the racism Ramanujan faced, nor from the cultural chasm between his devout Hinduism and Hardy's rigid secularism. It is a story about what it means to see the world differently, and the price of that vision.

Srinivasa Ramanujan works as a clerk in Madras, supporting his wife Janaki and his mother. His obsession with mathematics consumes him. He fills notebooks with equations, often scribbling on scraps of paper. Local scholars cannot understand his work. They tell him his ideas are too advanced, too strange. Desperate for recognition, he writes to three Cambridge professors. Only one responds: G. H. Hardy.
Hardy, a renowned number theorist at Trinity College, is initially skeptical. The proofs Ramanujan sent are unlike anything he has seen. They are brilliant but lack rigorous justification. Hardy consults his colleague J. E. Littlewood, and together they decide to bring Ramanujan to England. It is 1914. The First World War is beginning.
Ramanujan arrives in Cambridge to a world of cold stone, strict schedules, and unspoken rules. He struggles with the climate, the food, and the isolation. His vegetarianism becomes a serious problem during wartime rationing. He misses his wife, who remains in India because of visa restrictions and family obligations. Hardy demands that Ramanujan learn to prove his theorems formally, a process the intuitive mathematician finds painful and unnatural.
Their collaboration is tense. Hardy is a perfectionist who values logic above all else. Ramanujan sees mathematics as a spiritual revelation. He often says that equations are given to him by the goddess Namagiri. Hardy, an atheist, finds this troubling. Yet slowly, they begin to understand each other. Ramanujan publishes papers on partitions and infinite series that astound the mathematical community. Hardy pushes him to reach for the highest honor: election as a Fellow of the Royal Society.
But Ramanujan's health is failing. The cold, the poor diet, and the stress take their toll. He is diagnosed with tuberculosis and a severe vitamin deficiency. He spends months in sanatoriums. Hardy, now deeply invested in his friend's success, works tirelessly to secure the nomination. The film builds toward this moment of recognition, even as Ramanujan's body gives out. The question that hangs over everything is whether he will survive long enough to see his work acknowledged.
