    Overview

Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power transports viewers back to Middle-earth, thousands of years before Bilbo Baggins found a certain ring. Created by Patrick McKay and John D. Payne, this sprawling fantasy series premiered in September 2022 and has so far run for two seasons, with a third on the way. The show boasts a massive ensemble cast, including Morfydd Clark as the warrior elf Galadriel, Robert Aramayo as the young Elrond, and Charlie Vickers as the shapeshifting villain Sauron. Charles Edwards plays the elven smith Celebrimbor, while Owain Arthur and Sophia Nomvete bring warmth and humor as the dwarven prince Durin IV and his wife Disa. Set during the Second Age of Middle-earth, the series blends epic battles, political intrigue, and rich worldbuilding. With a TV-14 rating and a solid 7.2 rating from viewers, it's a visually stunning but sometimes slow-burn adaptation that has divided Tolkien purists while winning over new fans.

The series cost roughly $465 million for its first season, making it the most expensive television production ever. That budget shows in every frame, New Zealand's landscapes double for the Southlands, and Weta Workshop's practical effects mix with thousands of digital shots from ILM and DNEG. Bear McCreary's score weaves in Howard Shore's original themes while adding distinct motifs for Númenor, Khazad-dûm, and the Harfoots. The show's five-season arc was mapped out before filming began, with showrunners knowing the final shot from day one.

Thousands of years before the War of the Ring, the Second Age of Middle-earth is a time of uneasy peace. The Dark Lord Morgoth has been defeated, but his lieutenant Sauron has vanished. Galadriel, a commander in the elven armies, refuses to believe evil is gone. She spends centuries hunting for Sauron's traces, a quest that takes her across the frozen wastes of the Forodwaith and eventually to a raft at sea, where she meets Halbrand, a human survivor of a shipwreck with a mysterious past.

In Lindon, High King Gil-galad senses a growing shadow. He tasks Elrond with a diplomatic mission to the dwarf kingdom of Khazad-dûm. There, Elrond rekindles his friendship with Prince Durin IV, and together they uncover a vein of mithril, a metal that can halt the fading of elven light. This discovery sets off a chain of political maneuvering and greed that will echo for centuries.

Across the Sundering Seas, the island kingdom of Númenor is at a crossroads. Queen Regent Míriel rules alongside the ambitious chancellor Pharazôn, who stirs isolationist sentiment. When Galadriel and Halbrand arrive, they force a choice: aid the elves against a rising threat or stay within Númenor's walls. Captain Elendil and his son Isildur find themselves drawn into the conflict, their loyalties tested.

In the Southlands, the elf soldier Arondir guards a watchtower near the village of Tirharad. He falls in love with the human healer Bronwyn, but their peace shatters when orcs begin tunneling beneath the land. The orcs serve Adar, a tortured elf who claims to be Sauron's successor. Meanwhile, in the forests of Rhovanion, the nomadic Harfoots encounter a strange man who fell from the sky in a ball of fire. The young Harfoot Nori Brandyfoot takes him under her wing, calling him the Stranger, and helps him search for his identity.

Season 1 builds toward the forging of three elven rings, Narya, Nenya, and Vilya, crafted by Celebrimbor in secret. Season 2 picks up immediately after, with Sauron revealed and his plan in motion. He corrupts the dwarves of Khazad-dûm with a ring given to King Durin III, leading to disaster. He besieges the elven realm of Eregion, forcing Celebrimbor to forge nine rings for mortal men. The season ends with Sauron in command of a unified orc army, the elves scattered, and the Stranger heading east to discover his purpose as one of the Istari, the wizards sent to guide Middle-earth.

    Critical Consensus

The Rings of Power is a staggering visual achievement that brings Middle-earth to life with unprecedented scale. Critics praise its production design, score, and ambition, but many find the storytelling uneven and the character development stretched thin across multiple plotlines. The wide gap between critic and audience scores reflects a deeply polarizing reception, with passionate debates about lore changes and pacing.
