The story begins in a near-future society governed by strict laws against being single. Upon arrival at a mysterious hotel, new guests must immediately begin searching for a compatible mate. David arrives after his wife leaves him, initially hoping to remain human to maintain his dignity. David meets a diverse cast of desperate singles including the Short-Sighted Woman who cannot see clearly without glasses and various other eccentric characters like the Lisping Man and the Limping Man. He flees into the woods joining a group called Loners who have already been transformed or chosen to live as feral humans. They believe survival requires rejecting the very concept of romance that drove them to exile. David finds himself torn between his desire for connection and the harsh reality of the Loners existence.

In the woods, David encounters the Loner Leader, a stoic figure who has lost her sight and leads the group with an iron will. As he struggles with his identity and longing for the Short-Sighted Woman, tension builds between the structured oppressive society of the city and the chaotic freedom-loving but emotionally barren life of the woods.
