Three years after an event called the Sudden Departure saw 140 million people vanish without a trace, the world is still trying to make sense of the inexplicable loss. The series begins three years after October 14, 2011, the day of the Sudden Departure, when 2% of the world's population inexplicably disappeared. In Mapleton, New York, Police Chief Kevin Garvey struggles to maintain order and his own sanity amidst the lingering trauma. His wife, Laurie, has joined the white-clad, chain-smoking cult known as the Guilty Remnant, who believe that silence and smoking are the only appropriate responses to the loss. Kevin's son, Tom, leaves town to follow a charismatic figure named Holy Wayne. Meanwhile, Nora Durst, who lost her entire family in the Departure, becomes a central figure as she deals with her profound grief and the public's morbid curiosity about her experience.

Season 2 shifts the setting to Jarden, Texas, a town that became known as "Miracle" because no one there departed. It has become a pilgrimage site, attracting those desperate for answers or a sense of safety. The focus expands to include the Murphy family: John, Erika, and their children Evie and Michael. Kevin and Nora also arrive in Jarden, seeking a fresh start, but find that even this seemingly blessed place is not immune to the pervasive sense of unease and mystery. This season delves deeper into the characters' pasts, revealing hidden traumas and the complex dynamics within the Murphy family, particularly concerning Evie's disappearance, which mirrors the larger event.

The third and final season, set seven years after the Departure, sees the characters confronting the approaching seventh anniversary of the event. The narrative largely moves to Australia, following Kevin and Nora on a journey that forces them to confront their beliefs about the Departure, their relationship, and their desire for peace. Kevin's father, who believes he is the Pope, also embarks on a spiritual quest that intersects with the main characters' paths.
