Before departing, she leaves a note in the mailbox for the new resident, asking them to forward her mail. The new occupant, Alex Wyler (Keanu Reeves), an architect who has a strained relationship with his father Simon (Christopher Plummer), finds the note in 2004. He responds, confused because the house has been vacant for years. Through a series of letters, they discover the mailbox is a time portal, allowing them to communicate across a two-year gap.

Tensions rise when Kate's relationship with Morgan reaches a crossroads. Morgan proposes, and Kate accepts, though her heart remains with Alex. Meanwhile, Alex's father dies, leaving him a letter that offers a chance at reconciliation. In a desperate bid to bridge the gap, Alex leaves a clue for Kate: a copy of Jane Austen's Persuasion at a train station, which she retrieves.
