The K2

In 2016, South Korean cable network tvN aired a sleek action thriller that would become a benchmark for the genre. The K2, created by writer Jang Hyeok-Rin and director Kwak Jung-hwan, stars Ji Chang-wook as a former soldier turned bodyguard, Yoona as a traumatized heiress, and Song Yun-ah as one of the most chilling antagonists in K-drama history. The series follows Kim Je-Ha (Ji Chang-wook), a JSS special forces soldier framed for a murder he didn't commit while serving as a mercenary in Iraq. Yoo-Jin runs JSS Security, a private military company that serves the elite. She sees in Je-Ha a weapon she can wield and offers him a job as a bodyguard under the codename K2. Je-Ha accepts, knowing that the position will give him access to the powerful people who might hold the keys to his past.

But Yoo-Jin's motives are anything but simple. She is a woman who has clawed her way to power from a traumatic childhood, and she will stop at nothing to secure her husband's election. Her primary obstacle is Ko An-Na, her stepdaughter and the only living child of Jang Se-Joon. An-Na has been hidden away for years, suffering from severe panic attacks and agoraphobia triggered by her mother's mysterious death. Yoo-Jin keeps An-Na isolated, fearing that the truth about her mother's death could destroy the family. Je-Ha is assigned as An-Na's bodyguard, and their relationship evolves from guarded suspicion to deep trust. As Je-Ha digs deeper into the conspiracy that destroyed his life, he uncovers connections to Yoo-Jin's past and the presidential campaign. The world of The K2 is a dark, morally ambiguous place where the lines between hero and villain blur. JSS Security operates as a private army, and the election is a battlefield of backroom deals, blackmail, and murder.
