    About

The Hundred is a professional cricket league in the United Kingdom, distinctive as the only cricket competition in the world to use a 100-ball format designed to make matches shorter, faster, and more accessible. Organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), the league takes place annually during July and August. It features eight city-based teams: Birmingham Phoenix, London Spirit, Manchester Originals, Northern Superchargers, Oval Invincibles, Southern Brave, Trent Rockets, and Welsh Fire. Matches last approximately two and a half hours, with each team facing 100 balls, changing ends after every 10 deliveries. A key innovation is the double-header structure: almost every men's match is paired with a women's match at the same venue under a single ticket, giving equal billing to both competitions. Prize money is equal across the men's and women's tournaments, though player salaries remain higher for men. The league aims to attract new and younger audiences by emphasizing fast-paced action, music, and entertainment, positioning itself as a blockbuster sporting event rather than a traditional cricket fixture. Broadcast on free-to-air television via the BBC and on subscription service Sky Sports, The Hundred has been a subject of both enthusiasm and debate within the cricket community since its launch in 2021.

    History

The ECB first proposed a new 100-ball competition in September 2016, aiming to create a shorter, more television-friendly format. After discussions with the 18 first-class counties, the Professional Cricketers' Association, and the Marylebone Cricket Club, a vote of 16–3 favored development. On April 26, 2017, ECB members voted 38–3 to proceed. The league was officially launched in 2021, with the first matches played on July 21. The inaugural men's title was won by Southern Brave, while the women's title went to Oval Invincibles. The competition expanded in subsequent years, with tweaks to the playing conditions and scheduling. In 2025, a new rule allowed direct signings of overseas players for the first time, bypassing the draft system. The Hundred remains a central part of the ECB's strategy to grow the game, though it has faced criticism from traditionalists who argue it undermines the longer formats.

    Cultural Impact

The Hundred represents a significant effort to modernize cricket and broaden its appeal, particularly among younger audiences and families. Its fast-paced format and emphasis on entertainment have drawn comparisons to T20 leagues like the Indian Premier League. The league's commitment to gender equality, with double-headers and equal prize money, has been praised as a model for other sports. However, its long-term impact on the popularity of cricket in the UK remains a subject of debate, with some viewing it as a necessary innovation and others as a threat to the game's traditions.

    Controversies

The Hundred has faced criticism from traditional cricket fans and some county clubs who argue that the 100-ball format devalues the sport and that the ECB's investment in the league has come at the expense of other domestic competitions. Concerns have also been raised about the financial disparities between men's and women's player salaries, despite equal prize money. Additionally, the tournament's launch was delayed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to logistical challenges.
