    Overview

Sixteen-year-old Alus Reigin is the world's strongest Magicmaster, having killed more Fiends and reclaimed more territory than anyone else in the nation of Alpha. After a decade of military service, he asks for retirement. His superiors refuse but strike a deal: Alus goes on extended leave and enrolls as a student at the Second Institute of Alpha, a magical academy, where he must hide his true identity and train two female apprentices, Tesfia and Loki, to take his place. Balancing school life with secret Fiend hunts, Alus soon uncovers a sinister drug called Ambrosia that turns humans into monsters.

The series began as a web novel on Shōsetsuka ni Narō in 2015, written by Izushiro. Hobby Japan picked it up and launched the print light novel under its HJ Bunko imprint on February 28, 2017, with illustrations by Ruria Miyuki. As of December 2025, 20 volumes have been released in Japan. J-Novel Club licensed the series for English release in March 2019, with translation by Warnis and editing by Jan Suzukawa.

Two manga adaptations exist: an initial run by Yū Uonuma that was cancelled after two volumes, and a second titled The Greatest Magicmaster's Retirement Plan: The Alternative by Karu Yoneshiro, which ran from 2020 to 2023 and spans 10 volumes. A television anime adaptation by studio Hotline was announced in June 2026 and is scheduled to premiere in 2027.
