    About

The Gambia men's national football team represents the smallest country in mainland Africa on the global stage. Nicknamed The Scorpions, the squad operates under the Gambia Football Federation and competes within the Confederation of African Football structure. Although the nation achieved independence from Britain in 1965, the team did not join FIFA until 1976, spending its early years building a competitive foundation.

For decades the Scorpions chased continental glory without success, often falling short in qualification rounds against regional powerhouses like Senegal and Nigeria. That narrative shifted dramatically when they secured their first-ever appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2022. Playing in Cameroon, they entered Group A with Egypt, Ghana, and Mozambique. While they failed to advance past the group stage, that tournament marked a historic breakthrough for Gambian football.

    History

The Gambia Football Federation joined CAF in 1970 and FIFA four years later, launching the team into international competition. Early decades were defined by struggle as the federation worked to establish a domestic league and train players capable of competing abroad. The national setup relies heavily on the Gambia Premier League to identify local talent while also recruiting dual nationals living in Europe.

Independence Stadium in Banjul serves as the primary venue for home matches. This facility holds roughly 20,000 spectators and acts as the administrative hub for the federation. Unlike club teams, the national squad does not play a regular domestic schedule but gathers for specific qualifiers and friendly tournaments organized by FIFA or CAF.

Recent years have seen a strategic shift toward hiring experienced foreign coaches to improve tactical discipline. Managers like Tom Saintfiet brought European methods to the pitch, helping the team navigate complex qualification campaigns. Despite these efforts, consistency remains a challenge, particularly in away games where travel logistics and hostile environments test the squad.
