The Fame

Lady Gaga's debut album, The Fame, arrived on August 19, 2008, via Interscope Records, after she signed with KonLive Distribution and Cherrytree Records. Working with producers like RedOne, Martin Kierszenbaum, and Rob Fusari, Gaga crafted a sound rooted in electropop, synth-pop, and dance-pop, drawing from 1980s influences. The album's 14 tracks explore her fascination with fame, alongside themes of love, sex, money, drugs, and sexual identity. She promoted it through The Fame Ball Tour and TV appearances; a deluxe edition with The Fame Monster followed in November 2009.

The first two singles, "Just Dance" and "Poker Face", became global smashes, topping charts in the US, UK, and Australia. Later singles "LoveGame" and "Paparazzi" also hit the top ten in over ten countries. "Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say)" saw limited release in select markets, while "Beautiful, Dirty, Rich" served as a promo single. Critics praised the album's lyrics and Gaga's vocals. It hit number one in Austria, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Poland, Scotland, South Africa, Switzerland, and the UK. In the US, it spent 193 nonconsecutive weeks atop the Dance/Electronic Albums chart, a record. The Fame earned diamond certification in France and multi-platinum in many countries, selling over 4.9 million copies in the US by 2019. It won Best Electronic/Dance Album and Best Dance Recording at the 52nd Grammy Awards, plus Best International Album at the 2010 Brit Awards.
