The Fable

An elite hitman known as Fable faces a simple yet terrifying ultimatum: live as a normal high school student for one year without killing anyone, or face execution. Ordered by his crime boss to undergo rehabilitation in Osaka, the assassin enters Nankatsu High School with no intention of changing his ways, only to find that blending in requires more discipline than pulling a trigger. The story unfolds through slapstick misunderstandings where a lethal punch meant for a gangster ends up saving a classmate from a falling object, turning the violent protagonist into an accidental hero.

Katsuhisa Minami serialized this seinen series in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine from November 2014 until November 2019, compiling the chapters into 22 tankōbon volumes. The narrative balances brutal organized crime arcs with the absurdity of teenage life, exploring themes of redemption and found family rather than just action set pieces. Critics praised the unique tone for its seamless shift between graphic violence and genuine heartwarming moments, a style that earned the series the Kodansha Manga Award in the General Category in 2017.

Commercial success drove rapid expansion across multiple media formats, starting with live-action films released in June 2019 and 2021. Tezuka Productions adapted the manga into an anime series that aired throughout 2024, capturing the source material's energy for a global audience on platforms like Netflix and Hulu. By mid-2024, the franchise had sold over 25 million copies, prompting sequels including The Fable: The Second Contact and a third chapter titled The Fable: The Third Secret which began serialization in March 2025.
