The Evil Within
"A fractured reality where grief becomes a weapon."
Overview
On August 26, 2014, Tango Gameworks released The Evil Within, marking Shinji Mikami's return to the survival horror genre after years of working on action titles. The game places players in the role of Sebastian Castellanos, a Philadelphia detective who arrives at a psychiatric hospital only to find it abandoned and his team missing. Instead of a normal crime scene, Sebastian steps into STEM, a digital simulation created by a supercomputer that distorts human consciousness into a nightmarish landscape.
Mikami designed the experience to prioritize fear over combat prowess. Players must scavenge for limited ammunition and crafting materials while avoiding direct confrontations with grotesque mutants like Rippers and Spiders. The id Tech 5 engine powers high-fidelity visuals and complex lighting effects that enhance the oppressive atmosphere. Unlike many modern shooters, this title offers no multiplayer modes, focusing entirely on a solitary single-player campaign.
Gameplay
Sebastian navigates Union City using a third-person perspective that requires constant awareness of surroundings. The core loop involves managing scarce resources; finding bullets for pistols or shotguns often dictates whether a player survives an encounter. A shock system blurs vision and distorts audio when taking damage, simulating disorientation. Workbenches scattered throughout levels allow crafting of health kits and ammo from scavenged parts. Difficulty scales significantly in Nightmare Mode, which introduces permadeath mechanics and aggressive enemy behavior.
Story
Detective Sebastian Castellanos investigates a mass murder at the Union City Psychiatric Hospital but finds the location empty upon arrival. He is immediately transported into STEM, a virtual world generated by Joseph Oda to interface with human minds. Inside this fractured reality, Sebastian searches for his daughter Lily, who was kidnapped by Oda. The narrative weaves through surreal environments filled with mutated enemies as Sebastian uncovers the truth about the STEM project and the nature of his own grief. The climax forces a choice between saving Lily or destroying the system to prevent its use as a weapon.
