Kyotaro Ichikawa is a brooding middle schooler who sees himself as an outcast, and his classmate Anna Yamada is the bubbly, popular girl everyone adores. In his darker moments, he fantasizes about doing terrible things to her. But as he observes her more closely from his perch in the school library, he realizes she is not the perfect idol he imagined. She is clumsy, quirky, and surprisingly vulnerable, and his violent fantasies slowly give way to genuine affection. Norio Sakurai's The Dangers in My Heart is a tender, often hilarious romantic comedy that subverts the typical "opposites attract" trope with surprising depth.

Sakurai began serializing the web manga on the Champion Cross website in March 2018, and it quickly gained a devoted following for its sharp character writing and relatable portrayal of adolescent anxiety. The story has been collected into 13 tankōbon volumes as of early 2025, with the English edition published by Seven Seas Entertainment. The series has also spawned an anime adaptation by Shin-Ei Animation, which first aired in spring 2023 and returned for a second season in winter 2024. A third season is scheduled for 2027, and a feature film, The Dangers in My Heart: The Movie, was released in 2026, screening at Anime Boston and later streaming on HIDIVE.

What makes the manga stand out is its slow-burn romance. Ichikawa's internal monologue is darkly funny, but his growth feels earned. Yamada is not just a manic pixie dream girl; she is a fully realized character with her own insecurities.
