    Overview

Liam Neeson stars as Michael MacCauley, an insurance salesman whose daily commute on the Metro-North train line becomes a high-stakes game of survival. Facing significant financial pressure, including the potential cost of his son's college tuition, Michael's ordinary life is upended when a mysterious woman named Joanna approaches him. She presents him with a dangerous task: identify a hidden passenger on the train and plant a tracking device, with the promise of a life-changing sum of money in return.

As Michael navigates this perilous proposition, he finds himself drawn into a complex conspiracy. The train, a confined and moving environment, becomes the stage for escalating threats and unexpected violence. Michael must use his wits and past experiences to uncover the truth behind Joanna's motives and the identity of the target, all while trying to protect himself and his family from unseen dangers. The film, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, builds suspense as Michael encounters various passengers, some of whom may be involved or are also being manipulated.

Michael MacCauley, an insurance salesman, leads a predictable life with his wife Karen and son Danny. His routine is disrupted when he learns he needs to pay for Danny's college tuition out of pocket, a financial burden that causes him considerable stress. During his regular commute on the Metro-North train, a mysterious woman named Joanna approaches him. She reveals an intimate knowledge of his life and presents him with a dangerous offer: find a specific individual on the train and plant a GPS tracker on their belongings before the train reaches its final destination. In exchange, she promises a substantial sum of money, enough to resolve his financial troubles.

Initially skeptical, Michael is soon compelled to act as Joanna makes it clear that failure carries severe consequences for his family. He begins his covert investigation aboard the moving train, encountering a cast of characters who add to the mystery. Among them is Alex Murphy, a former colleague of Michael's from his days as a police detective, now working as a Transit Police detective. Walt, another former colleague, also appears, adding layers of suspicion and potential aid. Michael’s search for the target becomes increasingly complicated as he realizes the train is filled with potential suspects and obstacles.

As the journey progresses, Michael finds himself in increasingly dangerous situations. He must use his investigative skills to gather clues, deciphering subtle hints and observing the behavior of fellow passengers. The pressure mounts as he faces threats, both overt and subtle, from Joanna and potentially others involved in the conspiracy. The confined space of the train amplifies the tension, turning the daily commute into a desperate race against time. Michael is forced to confront the possibility that people he encounters are either part of the scheme or are also caught in its web, making it difficult to trust anyone.

The narrative weaves a complex tapestry of deception, with Michael trying to complete his task while also trying to understand the larger game at play. He encounters passengers like Vince, who seems to be involved in the illicit activities, and others who may be unwitting participants or potential victims. The film keeps the audience guessing about the true nature of the target and the motives of Joanna, whose actions are both menacing and calculated. Michael's determination to solve the puzzle intensifies as the train hurtles towards its final stop, with the safety of himself and his family hanging in the balance.

    Critical Reception

    Critical Consensus

"The Commuter" offers a reliably thrilling ride, thanks to Jaume Collet-Serra's solid direction and a committed performance from Liam Neeson, even if its plot becomes increasingly convoluted.

Liam Neeson once again finds himself in a high-stakes thriller, and while the plot may be familiar, his presence anchors the film.

    Frank Scheck

    The Hollywood Reporter

The film provides a decent, if somewhat formulaic, dose of suspense, benefiting from Neeson's knack for playing the everyman thrust into extraordinary circumstances.

    Manohla Dargis

    The New York Times

Jaume Collet-Serra crafts a taut, efficient thriller that makes the most of its confined setting and a determined Liam Neeson.

    David Ehrlich

    IndieWire

While the premise is thin and the twists predictable, 'The Commuter' delivers enough action and suspense to satisfy fans of the genre.

    Brian Lowry

    CNN

It's a paint-by-numbers thriller, but Neeson's gravity makes it watchable, even when the script strains credulity.
