    Overview

Steven Kovacs, recently out of a relationship and moving into a new apartment, finds himself the target of an overly enthusiastic cable installer named Chip. What begins as an attempt to build a friendship by Chip quickly spirals into obsession when Steven attempts to sever ties. This dark comedy, helmed by director Ben Stiller, stars Matthew Broderick as the increasingly beleaguered Steven and Jim Carrey in a role that showcases his dramatic range alongside his signature comedic timing.

Produced on a budget of around $47 million and grossing just over $102 million worldwide, The Cable Guy blends elements of comedy, drama, and thriller into a disquieting look at loneliness and the darker side of customer service. The supporting cast includes Leslie Mann as Steven's girlfriend Robin, Jack Black as his friend Rick, and George Segal and Diane Baker as Steven's parents. Despite its initial mixed reception, the film has since found a cult following for its sharp satire and Carrey's memorable performance.

Steven Kovacs is trying to get his life back on track after a breakup and a move into a new apartment. Needing to get his television hooked up, he hires Chip Douglas, a cable installer who seems a bit too eager to please. Chip goes far beyond his duties, offering unsolicited advice, gifts, and an insistent companionship that soon begins to feel intrusive. Steven, struggling with his personal and professional life, finds Chip's presence increasingly unsettling.

Chip, who appears to have constructed his understanding of friendship from decades of television sitcoms, Fixates on Steven as his sole best friend. As Steven attempts to create distance, Chip's behavior escalates. He begins to manipulate situations to keep Steven dependent on him, often through elaborate and disturbing schemes. These interventions extend to Steven's romantic life; Chip actively interferes with Steven's attempts to reconcile with his ex-girlfriend, Robin, and even sabotages his professional life by framing him for theft to prevent him from moving out of his current apartment.

The core conflict emerges from Steven's growing fear and discomfort with Chip's unhinged actions, juxtaposed against Chip's unwavering, yet deeply disturbed, conviction in their friendship. Steven finds himself trapped in a dangerous situation, a twisted game of cat and mouse as Chip's actions become more extreme and threatening. The tension builds as Steven tries desperately to escape Chip's escalating obsession and protect himself and those around him from Chip's increasingly erratic and violent behavior. All the while, the film maintains a dark humor derived from the sheer absurdity of Steven's predicament.
