The Buccaneers

Katherine Jakeways brings a sharp, satirical edge to the Apple TV drama The Buccaneers, a series that reimagines Edith Wharton's unfinished novel as a vibrant period piece. Premiering in November 2023 and concluding its first run by August 2025, the show follows five wealthy American heiresses who arrive in London during the 1870s with one goal: marry into the British aristocracy. The ensemble cast features Kristine Froseth as the spirited Nan St. George, Alisha Boe as the ambitious Conchita Closson, Aubri Ibrag as the shy Lizzy Elmsworth, Imogen Waterhouse as the young Jinny St. George, Josie Totah as the pragmatic Mabel Elmsworth, and Matthew Broome as the charming but elusive Guy Thwarte. This two-season, sixteen-episode run blends high-society intrigue with sharp social commentary. While the setting demands elegant gowns and stiff upper lips, the tone remains lively and often irreverent. Critics and audiences have responded well, holding a solid 7 out of 10 rating based on 140 votes. The series stands out for its focus on female agency, showing how these women navigate a rigid class system while chasing their own desires rather than just settling for duty.[edit]
