The Breeders

The Breeders are an American alternative rock band from Dayton, Ohio, centered on twin sisters Kim and Kelley Deal and admired as one of the defining indie acts of the 1990s. The project began as a side venture for Kim Deal during her time as bassist in the Pixies, but it grew into a celebrated band in its own right with a sound all its own: melodic yet off-kilter, mixing sweet harmonies, fuzzed-out guitars, and an unpolished, slightly woozy charm. Their breakthrough came with the album Last Splash and its single Cannonball, a quirky, instantly recognizable hit whose loping bassline and playful energy became an alternative-rock staple and a fixture of the era's music television. That record turned the band from cult favorites into a widely known name. The Breeders' history has been marked by long gaps and lineup changes, shaped in part by the Deal sisters' personal struggles, which lent their story a sense of fragility and resilience. Beloved by critics and fellow musicians, including Kurt Cobain, who championed their early work, they influenced waves of indie and lo-fi artists who followed. Kim Deal conceived The Breeders in 1988 while still playing bass for the Pixies. She wanted a creative outlet for songs that didn't fit the Pixies' sound. The initial lineup came together through her existing network: Tanya Donelly from Throwing Muses on guitar, Josephine Wiggs from The Perfect Disaster on bass, and Britt Walford from Slint on drums. There were no auditions. The band recorded their debut album Pod in just ten days with producer Steve Albini. Kim's twin sister Kelley joined in 1992, replacing Donelly, and the classic Last Splash lineup was born.[edit]

The Breeders' sound evolved from the raw, lo-fi dissonance of Pod, recorded in ten days with Steve Albini, to the polished yet quirky hooks of Last Splash. Title TK returned to a rawer, more experimental approach with longer, jam-based songs. Mountain Battles stripped things back, incorporating folk, country, and even a song in Portuguese. All Nerve marked a return to the classic lineup and sound, blending melodic hooks with off-kilter charm. The Breeders brought female-led alternative rock to mainstream audiences in the early 1990s. Their sound influenced indie and lo-fi artists like Pavement, The Strokes, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Kurt Cobain cited Pod as one of his favorite albums. The twin sisters' matching thrift-store dresses became an iconic look of the era. They pioneered the side-project-becomes-main-band model. In 2018, they served as cultural ambassadors for Dayton, Ohio, performing at the city's bicentennial celebration.[edit]

Fans, informally called Splashers, often dress in 1990s grunge attire at shows. A tradition of throwing inflatable beach balls during Cannonball began in 2013. In 2018, fans organized a worldwide Cannonball cover project for the album's 25th anniversary, raising $10,000 for music education charities. The band's name was inspired by a term Kim Deal heard in a documentary about animal husbandry. Cannonball was written in about ten minutes after a night of drinking. Kelley Deal was a dental hygienist before joining full-time in 1992. The Breeders were the first band to have a song played on MTV's Beavis and Butt-Head in 1993. Josephine Wiggs is a classically trained cellist who has played on albums by The Rolling Stones and Elvis Costello.[edit]
