The Beaches

From a basement in Toronto's Beaches neighborhood, four friends who met at Rosedale Heights School of the Arts built a band that would spend the next decade and a half evolving from garage rock openers to Juno-winning headliners. The Beaches started in 2009 under the name Done with Dolls, with sisters Jordan and Kylie Miller, drummer Eliza Enman-McDaniel, and an original fourth member. When that member quit, the group called Leandra Earl, and the lineup has stayed unchanged ever since.

After self-releasing two EPs in 2013 and 2014, the band signed to Universal Records and dropped their debut album Late Show in 2017. The record won them a Juno for Breakthrough Group of the Year and sent them on their first US tour. Two more EPs followed, The Professional (2019) and Future Lovers (2021), which they combined into the compilation Sisters Not Twins (The Professional Lovers Album) in 2022. That collection won the Juno for Rock Album of the Year.

Their sophomore album Blame My Ex, released in 2023 via AWAL, marked a sharp turn toward confessional, tongue-in-cheek songwriting. The lead single "Blame Brett" went viral on TikTok, sparking a social media frenzy and pushing the band to a wider audience. The album's success earned them the first of three consecutive Juno Awards for Group of the Year (2024, 2025, 2026).

In 2025 they released No Hard Feelings, a more indie-pop-leaning record that leaned into queer themes and what the band calls "perpetual adolescence." The album landed a spot on the Polaris Music Prize long list and was named one of the 40 best Canadian albums of 2026. The band has opened for the Rolling Stones, Foo Fighters, the Killers, and girl in red, and counts Elton John among their fans. They have had seven top 5 singles in Canada. [edit]

Sisters Jordan and Kylie Miller started playing music together as kids, their tour manager taught them guitar and placed them in their first band, Sisters Others and Brothers (SOB). By grade one, they had met drummer Eliza Enman-McDaniel, and the three of them, plus an original fourth member, began writing songs and playing Toronto shows in grade seven under the name Done with Dolls.

When the fourth member quit, the group's first call was to Leandra Earl, a friend from Rosedale Heights School of the Arts. Earl joined on keyboards and guitar, and the lineup clicked immediately. In 2013 they rebranded as The Beaches, named after the Toronto neighborhood where they grew up. The Beaches started with a raw garage rock and glam rock sound on their early EPs, all fuzzy guitars and punchy drums. Their debut album Late Show tightened that into a dance-rock and pop-rock hybrid, with Jordan Miller's vocals cutting through layered riffs. The EPs The Professional and Future Lovers pushed toward polished indie pop, but the band's real reinvention came with Blame My Ex. That album traded some of the guitar crunch for sharper pop hooks and vulnerable, often funny lyrics, Jordan called it "laugh-through-the-tears" energy.

On No Hard Feelings, the band leaned further into indie pop, with synthesizers and cleaner production taking center stage. Lyrically, the album explores queer identity, heartbreak, and the choice to stay in a state of "perpetual adolescence" rather than follow traditional adult milestones. Across all their eras, the band's sound stays rooted in Jordan's commanding bass lines and the tight rhythm section of Eliza Enman-McDaniel, with Leandra Earl adding texture on keys and guitar. As an all-female rock band, The Beaches have navigated a genre where women are still often treated as exceptions. They've consistently pushed back against being called a "girl group," preferring to let their music do the talking. Their embrace of queer identity, from the single "Lesbian of the Year" to open discussions in interviews, has made them a visible presence in a scene that hasn't always been welcoming.

The band's decision to leave Universal Records for AWAL and release Blame My Ex independently became a case study in artistic control. The viral success of "Blame Brett" on TikTok proved that a Canadian rock band could break through without a major label's machinery. Opening for the Rolling Stones in 2019 and Foo Fighters afterward gave them a stamp of approval from rock royalty, while Elton John publicly declared himself a fan. The Beaches don't have an official fandom name, lightstick, or fan color, typical for a rock band that built its following through live shows rather than K-pop style fan infrastructure. What they do have is a fiercely loyal base that shows up. Their tours regularly sell out across Canada and the US, and fans have turned "Blame Brett" into a singalong anthem at every show. The band's social media presence is direct and unpolished, with Jordan Miller frequently interacting with fans and sharing behind-the-scenes content. Elton John counts himself among their followers. The Miller sisters had an earlier childhood band called Sisters Others and Brothers (SOB). Leandra Earl and Jordan Miller once wrote a "Dracula rock opera" that the rest of the band has to talk them out of pursuing. The band members are all in their mid-20s despite having been in the band for over a decade. Their tour manager taught Jordan and Kylie Miller how to play guitar.
