The Audience

October 24, 2013 marked the premiere of Peter Morgan's *The Audience* at London's Gielgud Theatre. The production opened with a stark simplicity: Queen Elizabeth II seated in a chair, facing her first Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. Over eighteen scenes spanning sixty years, the play tracks the private weekly meetings between the monarch and twelve different heads of government. The narrative moves from the Suez Crisis to the Falklands War, then through the death of Princess Diana, all without a single flashback or voiceover. Instead, the story relies on the shifting tone of the Queen's performance and the evolving political landscape.

Helen Mirren originated the title role, delivering a performance that critics called definitive. She brought a quiet intensity to the character, capturing the burden of duty while maintaining the Queen's famous reserve. Her portrayal earned her the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a New Play in 2014. When the show transferred to Broadway in November 2015, Mirren repeated her triumph, winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play. This achievement made her one of the few performers to win both major awards for the same role.

Beyond the stage, National Theatre Live captured the production in 2013 for global cinema release. Directed by Stephen Daldry, this filmed version preserved the intimacy of the live performance and ran for approximately two hours and fifty-three minutes. The script was later published by Bloomsbury Publishing in the UK and Samuel French in the US.
