    Overview

Hyūganatsu's The Apothecary Diaries started as a web novel on Shōsetsuka ni Narō in 2011, before Shufunotomo picked it up as a single volume in 2012 and later launched it as a light novel series in 2014. The books, illustrated by Touko Shino, run about 250 to 300 pages each, blending historical intrigue with medical mystery. Set in a fictional empire inspired by Tang Dynasty China, the story follows Maomao, a sharp-witted young woman raised by her apothecary father. After being sold to the imperial palace as a lowly servant, she keeps her medical expertise hidden until a chance encounter with the emperor's children draws her into courtly conspiracies. Using her knowledge of herbs and poisons, Maomao quietly solves baffling cases, from unexplained illnesses to political sabotage, all while navigating the rigid hierarchies of the inner court.

The series has grown into a multimedia empire. Two manga adaptations launched in 2017: one by Nekokurage in Square Enix's Monthly Big Gangan, and another by Minoji Kurata in Shogakukan's Monthly Sunday Gene-X. J-Novel Club handles the digital English release of the light novels, while Square Enix prints both the novels and Nekokurage's manga in North America. An anime adaptation by Toho Animation Studio and OLM aired its first season from October 2023 to March 2024, with a second season following from January to July 2025. A third season is slated for October 2026, and an anime film is due in Japanese theaters in December 2026. With its clever heroine and richly detailed setting, The Apothecary Diaries has become a favorite for fans of historical mysteries and character-driven storytelling.
