Christian Wolff operates a CPA office in Plainfield, Illinois, but his real clients include drug cartels, mobsters, and terrorists who pay him to find financial irregularities in their books. He lives a life of rigid routine: he cooks the same breakfast, sets his watch to the exact second, and avoids social contact. His childhood, shown in flashbacks, reveals a father who rejected conventional autism treatments and instead trained Christian and his younger brother Brax in martial arts and firearms, forcing them to endure sensory overloads until they could function under any condition.

The story proper begins when Living Robotics hires Christian to audit their books after Dana Cummings, a junior accountant, discovers a discrepancy of over $61 million. Christian takes the job reluctantly, drawn by the intellectual challenge. At the company, he meets Lamar Blackburn, the charismatic CEO, and his sister Rita, who runs the board. Christian's investigation uncovers a shell company siphoning funds, but before he can report his findings, people connected to the case start dying.

Simultaneously, Treasury agent Ray King pressures his young colleague Marybeth Medina to track down the mysterious Accountant before King retires. King has been obsessed with this figure for years, but he holds back key information from Medina, hinting at a personal connection. Medina follows a trail of old case files and financial anomalies, slowly closing in on Christian's identity.

The assassin, a silent man covered in tattoos who communicates via text messages, murders everyone who might expose the Living Robotics fraud. Christian realizes Dana is in danger and takes her to a safe house, revealing his combat training and his condition to her. She begins to understand his world: the need for order, the difficulty with eye contact, the way he processes information visually. Their relationship develops tentatively, with Christian showing rare moments of openness.

Christian uses his old prison connections to trace the assassin. In prison, he learned accounting from a convicted fraudster named Francis Silverberg, who also taught him how to disappear. Christian's father had arranged for him to be incarcerated as a teenager to learn survival skills. The flashbacks deepen the portrait of a man shaped by trauma and discipline, who channels his obsessive focus into numbers and violence.

The Treasury agents get closer, but King reveals to Medina that he has known Christian's identity for years and has been using him as an informant. King's true motive is to protect Christian while bringing down bigger targets. Medina is furious but continues the investigation.
