Texas Longhorns men's basketball

The Texas Longhorns men's basketball team represents the University of Texas at Austin in NCAA Division I competition. Founded in 1906, the program stands as one of the oldest and most storied franchises in college sports history. The team currently holds an all-time record of 1,936 wins against 1,170 losses, ranking fifteenth nationally in total victories with a .623 winning percentage. For decades the squad competed within the Big 12 Conference before officially joining the Southeastern Conference on July 1, 2024.

Modern dominance began under Rick Barnes, who served as head coach from 1998 to 2015. Barnes led the team to sixteen NCAA Tournament appearances and fifteen consecutive seasons with twenty or more wins. Following his departure, the program navigated a transition period under Chris Beard and Rodney Terry. Terry coached until his dismissal in March 2025, paving the way for Sean Miller to take over as head coach later that same month.

Despite reaching the Final Four three times and appearing in forty NCAA Tournaments overall, the team has never secured an NCAA National Championship. Their most prominent run occurred in 2003 when they finished as national runners-up after losing to Syracuse. Early eras saw fluctuating success, including a prolonged slump between 1951 and 1988 where the team endured multiple losing campaigns. Abe Lemons and Tom Penders helped stabilize the franchise during the late twentieth century, setting the stage for sustained excellence.

Rick Barnes arrived in 1998 and transformed the roster into a perennial contender. His tenure included sixteen NCAA Tournament bids and fifteen straight twenty-win seasons. The 2003 season marked the program's peak achievement when Michael Sweetney and Alvin Williams led the team to the championship game. Although they lost to Syracuse, this run remains the closest the university has come to a national title.

Leadership changes followed Barnes' exit in 2015. Chris Beard took the helm briefly before moving to Georgia Tech, followed by Rodney Terry who coached until March 2025. Sean Miller assumed control in mid-2025, bringing a new strategic focus to the program. The team also mourned the loss of Jason Klotz in September 2026, highlighting the tight community surrounding the squad.

Facilities evolved alongside competitive performance. The team moved from the Frank Erwin Center to the Moody Center, which opened in 2022. This modern arena serves as the operational hub for recruiting and fan engagement.
