Tesco

Tesco is a British multinational groceries and general merchandise retailer that began its journey in 1919. It was started by Jack Cohen, the son of Jewish migrants from Poland, who opened his first business selling war-surplus groceries from a stall at Well Street Market in Hackney, London. The name 'Tesco' itself has an interesting origin. It came about in 1924 when Cohen created his own brand of tea. He combined the first two letters of his surname, 'Co', with the first three letters of his tea supplier's name, Thomas Edward Stockwell, 'Tes', to form 'Tesco'.

From those humble beginnings, Tesco grew into one of the largest retailers in the world. The company's headquarters are now based in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England. Operating as a public company, Tesco is a major player on the London Stock Exchange. Key figures leading the company include Chairman Gerry Murphy and CEO Ken Murphy. As of recent years, Tesco has consistently ranked among the top global retailers by revenue and stands as the undisputed market leader for groceries in the UK, holding a significant share of the market.
