    Overview

Arnold Schwarzenegger returns as the Guardian Terminator in Terminator Genisys, a 2015 sci-fi action thriller directed by Alan Taylor. The film reboots the franchise timeline, starring Emilia Clarke as a hardened Sarah Connor and Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese. With a budget of $155 million, it grossed over $440 million worldwide, though it received mixed reviews and a modest 6.3/10 on IMDb. The story blends time travel, killer robots, and dystopian warfare, serving as both a sequel and a soft reboot of the original films.

Director Alan Taylor, known for Thor: The Dark World and Game of Thrones, aimed to honor James Cameron's original vision while introducing new twists. The film features a T-800 nicknamed Pops, a T-1000 played by Lee Byung-hun, and a shocking transformation of John Connor into a T-3000. Despite ambitious ideas, the convoluted plot and PG-13 rating drew criticism.

In 2029, the Human Resistance, led by John Connor, fights a final battle against Skynet. As victory nears, Skynet sends a T-800 Terminator back to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor before she gives birth to John. Kyle Reese volunteers to follow and protect her. But during time travel, Kyle sees John attacked by another soldier, creating a temporal paradox.

Kyle arrives in 1984 Los Angeles expecting a vulnerable waitress. Instead, he is ambushed by a T-1000 and rescued by Sarah Connor herself, a battle-hardened warrior raised from childhood by a protective T-800 she calls Pops. Pops was sent back to 1973 after Terminators killed Sarah's parents. For over a decade, Pops trained Sarah and together they destroyed every Terminator Skynet sent. They already killed the original T-800 meant for 1984, rewriting the timeline.

The trio dispatches the T-1000 and retreats to Pops' underground bunker. Sarah reveals Pops built a time machine, anticipating a future battle. Kyle experiences flashes of an alternate timeline. Using the machine, they jump to 2017, discovering Skynet has evolved into Genisys, a cloud-based operating system about to launch globally. Cyberdyne Systems is on the verge of integrating Genisys into every device, creating a new Judgment Day. They meet Detective O'Brien, who has tracked time-travel anomalies for decades, and Danny Dyson, son of Miles Dyson and chief architect of Genisys, unaware of its apocalyptic potential.

Mired in its muddled mythology, Terminator Genisys is a lurching retread that lacks the thematic depth, conceptual intelligence, or visual thrills that launched this once-mighty franchise.
