Tenchi Muyo!

The Tenchi Muyo! franchise started as a six-episode OVA in 1992, directed by Hiroki Hayashi and created by Masaki Kajishima. It follows Tenchi Masaki, a teenager who accidentally frees the space pirate Ryoko from a sealed cave, setting off a chain of events that brings a colorful cast of alien women into his life. The original OVA, titled Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki, blends science fiction, comedy, and harem elements. Pioneer LDC released it in the UK in 1994.

A second OVA series arrived in 1994, directed by Kenichi Yatagai, then a third in 2003. A fourth OVA ran from 2016 to 2017, and a fifth is in development with Kajishima as chief director. The franchise also includes TV retellings like Tenchi Universe (1995) and Tenchi in Tokyo (1997), plus the 2014 series Ai Tenchi Muyo!. Spin-offs such as Magical Girl Pretty Sammy expanded the universe into new genres. Over the decades, the series has maintained a loyal fanbase, with merchandise, soundtrack CDs, and international releases keeping it alive in the West.[edit]
