Released on August 5, 2008, "Tell Me Something I Don't Know" marked Selena Gomez's entry into the music industry. The song served as the lead single from the soundtrack to the direct-to-video sequel Another Cinderella Story, in which Gomez starred. A Radio Disney edit, which removed a Hurricane Katrina reference from the semi-rap interlude, was released digitally on September 9, 2008. The track peaked at number 58 on the US Billboard Hot 100, a modest debut that nonetheless set the stage for her later success.

Written by Ralph Churchwell and Michael Nielsen, the song was originally produced for the soundtrack. After its initial release, Hollywood Records commissioned a re-recorded version produced by Rock Mafia, which was included on Selena Gomez & the Scene's 2009 debut album Kiss & Tell. The re-recorded version later appeared on the 2014 compilation For You. The song's upbeat, slightly sassy tone hinted at the pop-rock sound Gomez would refine on subsequent albums.

The official music video, featuring Gomez in a high school setting intercut with scenes from the film, accompanied the Radio Disney edit.
