The story of Tata Trusts began in 1892 with Jamsetji Tata, a visionary industrialist who believed deeply in the power of philanthropy to uplift society. His foundational principles and early initiatives paved the way for organized charitable giving in India. Following his vision, the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust was established in 1932, and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust was founded in 1919, marking a significant step in institutionalizing philanthropy.

The Sir Ratan Tata Trust, in particular, was among the earliest grant-making foundations in India, established with an initial corpus of ₹8 million. These early trusts, and the many that followed under the Tata umbrella, quickly began supporting a wide range of social causes.
