Conventional honours do not apply here, and that is worth stating plainly. Tank Man has no awards, no Hall of Fame induction, no star on any walk, and no magazine cover in his own right, because he is unidentified and has no public career to honour. The distinctions belong to the photograph and to the people who made it. Widener's image is held by the National Gallery of Art, and the event has been the subject of museum retrospectives and documentary production for more than three decades. What Tank Man has instead of trophies is reach: a few minutes of footage that has been reproduced, discussed, censored, and revisited on every major anniversary since 1989. That kind of endurance is not something an awards body can confer.

Jeff Widener's Associated Press image of the June 5, 1989, standoff on Chang'an Avenue is held in the collection of the National Gallery of Art and is widely cited as one of the defining photographs of the century.
