Tampa Bay Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays are a professional baseball team based in St. Petersburg, Florida, competing in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member of the American League East Division. They are one of two MLB teams in Florida, the other being the Miami Marlins. The team plays its home games at Tropicana Field. After decades of efforts to establish an MLB presence in the Tampa Bay area, an ownership group led by Vince Naimoli was approved on March 9, 1995. The franchise debuted in 1998 as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

The team's initial years were challenging, consistently finishing at or near the bottom of the AL East standings. A significant turning point came in 2005 when Stuart Sternberg acquired controlling interest. Following the 2007 season, the team was rebranded as the Rays, a name reflecting both the marine life and the sunshine characteristic of the region. The 2008 season marked a dramatic improvement, with the team achieving its first winning record, winning the AL East, and ultimately capturing the American League pennant by defeating the rival Boston Red Sox in the ALCS. Since their pennant-winning season, the Rays have maintained a competitive presence, making the postseason multiple times and earning another AL pennant in 2020, though they were defeated by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series that year. The Rays have continued to be a competitive force, often achieving success despite a lower payroll by focusing on analytics and player development.
