    Takeshi Kitano is one of the most decorated Japanese filmmakers. He is the third Japanese director to win the Golden Lion at Venice, after Akira Kurosawa and Keisuke Kinoshita. His film Hana-bi is often cited among the greatest of the 21st century. He has won Best Director at Venice for Zatoichi and received a lifetime achievement Golden Lion in 2023. Domestically, he has swept major awards including multiple Japan Academy Prizes. In 2015, the Japanese government awarded him the Order of Culture for his contributions to the arts.
