About
In 1994, Deutsche Telekom launched VoiceStream Wireless PCS, the precursor to what would become T-Mobile. Two years later, the T-Mobile brand officially appeared, its magenta logo soon becoming one of the most recognizable symbols in telecom. The company entered the U.S. market in earnest with the 2001 acquisition of VoiceStream, rebranding those operations as T-Mobile USA.
The real transformation began in 2013. That March, newly appointed CEO John Legere unveiled the Un-carrier strategy, a direct assault on industry norms. T-Mobile eliminated annual service contracts, introduced early upgrade programs, and simplified pricing with truly unlimited data plans. Competitors were forced to respond, sparking a price war that reshaped the entire U.S. wireless landscape. Legere's confrontational style and magenta-clad appearances turned him into a celebrity CEO.
A series of mergers supercharged T-Mobile's growth. The 2013 merger with MetroPCS created T-Mobile US, Inc., and the $26 billion acquisition of Sprint closed in April 2020, cementing T-Mobile as the second-largest U.S. carrier with roughly 142 million customers by late 2025. More recently, the company acquired Mint Mobile and Ultra Mobile in 2024, and completed the purchase of UScellular's wireless operations on August 1, 2025. Today, T-Mobile US operates the largest and fastest 5G network in the country, reaching 70 million households with its fixed wireless broadband service. Its market capitalization hit $225 billion at the end of 2025, making it the world's most valuable telecom company.
