Sysco
United States"The world's largest foodservice distributor, supplying ingredients and supplies to restaurants, healthcare, education, and more."
About
Sysco, an acronym for Systems and Services Company, was founded on March 19, 1969, through the merger of nine regional food distributors. The driving force behind the merger was John F. Baugh, who had previously founded Zero Foods Company in Houston in 1946. He convinced the owners of eight other distributors to combine, creating a national-scale entity with combined 1969 revenues of $115 million. The other founders were Herbert Irving and Harry Rosenthal. Sysco went public on the New York Stock Exchange on March 3, 1970, under the ticker symbol SYY. By 1977, it had become the largest foodservice supplier in the United States, a position it has held for over 45 consecutive years.
Headquartered in the Energy Corridor district of Houston, Texas, Sysco as of June 2025 employed approximately 75,000 people and operated 337 distribution facilities. The company serves roughly 730,000 customer locations, including restaurants, hospitals, schools, hotels, and sports stadiums. Its product line encompasses approximately 200,000 items: fresh and frozen meats, seafood, poultry, produce, baked goods, dairy, beverages, paper and disposable items, janitorial supplies, kitchen equipment, and tableware. Sysco also offers services like menu design, food safety consulting, and business solutions.
Sysco's growth has been driven primarily through dozens of acquisitions. Major purchases include Staley Continental (CFS Continental) in 1988 and Brakes in the UK in 2019, forming Sysco GB. In fiscal year 2025, Sysco reported record revenue of $81.4 billion. The company's market capitalization as of mid-2025 was approximately $38 billion. Sysco has consistently been ranked in the Fortune 500, placing 54th in 2024. Its primary competitors include US Foods, Performance Food Group, and Gordon Food Service.
