Overview
Superman has flown across cinema screens for decades, evolving from black-and-white serials to the high-stakes blockbusters of the modern era. The character's journey began with animated shorts in 1941 and live-action features like Superman and the Mole Men starring George Reeves. By the late 1970s, producers Ilya and Alexander Salkind secured the rights and hired Richard Donner to helm a grand vision. This effort resulted in the 1978 film Superman: The Movie, which introduced Christopher Reeve as the Man of Steel and set a new standard for superhero storytelling with its blend of wonder and action. The production spanned two films shot back-to-back, though creative differences later led to Donner being replaced on the sequel by Richard Lester. Subsequent entries included Superman III and the ill-fated Superman IV before Warner Bros. took over the franchise in the 1990s. After several failed attempts involving directors like Tim Burton and J.J. Abrams, Bryan Singer brought Brandon Routh back to the screen in 2006 with Superman Returns. The studio eventually rebooted the mythos again with Zack Snyder's Man of Steel in 2013, launching Henry Cavill into the DC Extended Universe. More recently, James Gunn has taken the reins to restart the franchise entirely with David Corenswet in the upcoming Superman (2025), signaling a fresh chapter for the iconic hero.
