Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow
Tom King, Bilquis Evely
Overview
On her 21st birthday, Supergirl feels adrift in a universe that no longer needs her. When a young alien girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll seeks vengeance against the space pirate Krem of the Yellow Hills, who murdered her father, Supergirl reluctantly agrees to join her quest. The story is framed as a narrative told by an older Ruthye, recounting their epic journey across the galaxy. The series blends space opera, Western, and coming-of-age elements, with Supergirl serving as a stoic, reluctant mentor to the vengeful child.
Written by Tom King with art by Bilquis Evely and colors by Matheus Lopes, the eight-issue miniseries was published monthly from June 2021 to February 2022. It is part of DC's Infinite Frontier initiative but functions as a largely standalone story. Central themes include grief, vengeance versus justice, identity, and the cost of violence. King's script deliberately echoes classic Westerns like True Grit, while Evely's art evokes the grandeur of cosmic science fiction, frequently compared to Moebius and Jean Giraud.
The series received widespread critical acclaim, holding a score of 8.8 out of 10 on Comic Book Roundup. It won the 2023 Eisner Award for Best Limited Series, and Evely won the Eisner for Best Penciller/Inker. It was also a finalist for the 2023 Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story. The collected hardcover debuted at #1 on the New York Times Graphic Books Best Seller list in May 2022. A live-action film adaptation is in development at DC Studios, with Milly Alcock cast as Supergirl and Craig Gillespie directing.
