Super Shy

NewJeans released "Super Shy" on July 7, 2023, as the lead single from their second EP Get Up. The song fuses liquid drum and bass with Jersey club and bubblegum pop, driven by a staccato kick drum and airy synth pads. ADOR, a Hybe subsidiary, handled the digital release, while Interscope Records promoted it to US radio from August 8, 2023. The writing team included Gigi, Kim Dong-hyun, Erika de Casier, Kristine Bogan, Frankie Scoca, and member Danielle, who earned her first official writing credit on a NewJeans single. The lyrics capture the nervous excitement of a shy person confessing a crush, delivered over a minimalist arrangement that forgoes a traditional chorus for a repetitive, chant-like hook.

Critics responded warmly. NME rated it 4/5 stars, calling it a masterclass in minimalist pop. Pitchfork awarded it Best New Track, describing it as a dizzying, joyful rush. Rolling Stone ranked it number 4 on their 100 Best Songs of 2023 list. The song became NewJeans' third number one on South Korea's Circle Digital Chart and topped charts in Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Taiwan. On the Billboard Global 200, it peaked at number two, and it entered the US Hot 100 at number 64, the group's first entry there. In the UK, it reached number 52, their highest chart position to date.

The music video, directed by Shin Hee-won, was filmed in Lisbon, Portugal, and shows the members spontaneously joining a flash mob in public spaces. The visuals lean into Y2K nostalgia with low-rise jeans, digital cameras, and chunky sneakers. Choreographed by Black.Q and Eunju Kim, the dance incorporates waacking and simple, infectious moves that went viral on TikTok under the #SuperShyChallenge, accumulating over 1 billion views within weeks. The song also sparked a fashion trend around Y2K-inspired outfits and was featured in promotions for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.[edit]
