"Clean up the island or be blamed for the mess."

Overview
Released in July 2002, Super Mario Sunshine serves as the second mainline 3D platformer following Super Mario 64. Directed by Yoshiaki Koizumi and Kenta Usui under Shigeru Miyamoto's supervision, the game shifted the franchise from open exploration to a structured collect-a-thon on the tropical Isle Delfino. Mario arrives with Princess Peach and an entourage of Toads only to find the island covered in graffiti and himself framed by a doppelganger known as Shadow Mario.
The narrative drives players to clear their name by cleaning pollution using F.L.U.D.D., a water-spraying backpack left by Professor E. Gadd. This device enables unique traversal methods like hovering over gaps and boosting forward speed while allowing players to defeat enemies and solve puzzles. The story culminates in a confrontation with Bowser Jr., who orchestrated the frame-up with help from alien forces.
Gameplay
Mario must navigate seven distinct areas including Pinna Park and Ricco Harbor to collect Shine Sprites. Players use F.L.U.D.D. to spray water jets that remove grime from surfaces, revealing hidden paths or items. The Turbo Nozzle allows for high-speed dashes while the Hover Nozzle provides aerial stability over large gaps. Unlike its predecessor where players could choose their own path freely, this title features a more linear progression where specific missions unlock new abilities or access to different zones.
Combat involves extinguishing fires and defeating enemies with precise water streams rather than traditional jumping attacks. Green Coins and Blue Coins serve as secondary collectibles scattered throughout the levels. The game runs at a smooth 60 frames per second and features dynamic weather systems ranging from rain to fog cycles.
Story
The vacation turns sour when a mysterious figure dressed as Mario, called Shadow Mario, defaces the island with graffiti. Mario is falsely accused of the crime and must prove his innocence by cleaning up the mess across Isle Delfino. As he gathers Shine Sprites, he uncovers a conspiracy involving Bowser Jr. and an alien entity named FLUDD. The antagonist uses the shadowy substance to corrupt the environment and manipulate events.
Bowser Jr. reveals himself as the mastermind behind the disguise and the pollution. He intended to steal the Crown of the Sun and rule the island. After a series of battles against various minions and environmental hazards, Mario defeats the final boss and clears his name. The island is restored to its former glory, though the cleanup effort leaves Mario exhausted.
