Super Freak

Released in August 1981, "Super Freak" became Rick James's biggest hit and a defining track of the early 1980s funk scene. Co-written with Alonzo Miller, the song appeared on James's fifth album Street Songs, which itself was a commercial and critical success. The track blends funk, synth-funk, new wave, and R&B, driven by a prominent bassline and James's distinctive vocal delivery. Backing vocals came from The Temptations, including James's uncle Melvin Franklin, and Canadian singer Taborah Johnson. The instrumental lineup featured Narada Michael Walden on drums, Tom McDermott on guitar, Oscar Alston on bass, and Levi Ruffin on electric piano and Crumar synthesizer.

The song's lyrics, describing a sexually adventurous woman, pushed boundaries and helped popularize the slang term "freak." Lines like "She's a very kinky girl / The kind you don't take home to mother" sparked both controversy and fascination. The single peaked at No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 3 on the R&B chart, while reaching No. 13 in Canada and No. 47 in the UK. It earned a Grammy nomination for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance at the 24th Annual Grammy Awards in 1982 and was certified Gold by the RIAA in November 1981.

The song's cultural footprint extends far beyond its initial release. MC Hammer's 1990 global hit "U Can't Touch This" famously sampled its bassline, introducing the track to a new generation. Later interpolations include Jay-Z's "Show Me What You Got" (2006) and Nicki Minaj's "Super Freaky Girl" (2022). In 2006, Dutch house group Beatfreakz released a cover titled "Superfreak" that reached No. 7 on the UK Singles Chart. Rolling Stone ranked "Super Freak" No. 153 on its 2021 list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, up from No. 477 in 2004. [edit]
