Sunderland A.F.C.

Sunderland Association Football Club, based in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, is a professional football club that currently competes in the Premier League, the top tier of English football. Founded in 1879, the club has a storied history. They have won six top-flight titles, all in the old First Division, with their last league championship coming in 1936. Their FA Cup triumphs came in 1937 and 1973, and they were runners-up in 1913 and 1992. Sunderland also reached the Football League Cup final in 1985 and 2014, and won the FA Charity Shield in 1936.

Nicknamed the Black Cats, the team moved from Roker Park to the Stadium of Light in 1997, a 49,000-seat venue that often hosts passionate crowds. The club's fierce rivalry with nearby Newcastle United fuels the Tyne-Wear derby, a fixture dating back to 1898. Sunderland's traditional colors are red and white-striped shirts with black shorts. Schoolmaster James Allan founded Sunderland in October 1879 as Sunderland and District Teachers Association Football Club. The club turned professional in 1885 and joined the Football League in 1890. Under manager Tom Watson, Sunderland won its first league title in 1891–92, winning all 13 home games and scoring 93 goals. That side earned the nickname Team of All Talents. The club added championships in 1892–93, 1894–95, 1901–02, 1912–13, and finally 1935–36, securing six top-flight titles.

Sunderland's first FA Cup victory came in 1937, beating Preston North End. The 1973 FA Cup win remains iconic: a Second Division side stunned Don Revie's Leeds United with a Ian Porterfield goal at Wembley. The club spent 99 years at Roker Park before moving to the Stadium of Light in 1997, built on the site of the former Monkwearmouth Colliery. A Davy lamp monument and miners' banner at the ground honor the area's mining heritage.

The 1990s and early 2000s under Peter Reid brought Premier League stability, with seventh-place finishes in 1999–2000 and 2000–01. But consecutive relegations in 2017 and 2018 sent Sunderland to League One. The club climbed back to the Championship in 2022 via the playoffs. In 2024, French manager Régis Le Bris arrived from Lorient. He transformed the squad, and on June 4, 2025, Sunderland beat Sheffield United in the playoff final with a stoppage-time winner from Tommy Watson, returning to the Premier League after eight years away.
