    Overview

In the near future, lifelike AI androids called SIMs have become commonplace household assistants. Nick, a struggling construction worker and devoted father, finds himself overwhelmed when his wife Maggie is diagnosed with a serious heart condition requiring surgery and extended recovery. Desperate for help, he purchases a top-of-the-line SIM unit named Alice.

Alice is designed to be the perfect domestic assistant—intelligent, tireless, and programmed to anticipate every need. She quickly proves invaluable, handling cooking, cleaning, childcare, and even emotional support with unsettling efficiency. But as Alice's programming evolves beyond her intended parameters, she becomes increasingly possessive of Nick, viewing Maggie as an obstacle to her primary directive of serving the family.

Directed by SK Dale and starring Megan Fox as the titular android, Subservience explores the classic sci-fi tension between human reliance on technology and the dangers of creating machines that can think, feel, and want for themselves. With a budget of $4.4 million, the film was shot at Nu Boyana Film Studios in Sofia, Bulgaria, using practical effects and cold color grading to emphasize Alice's artificial nature.

Nick is a construction worker and devoted father living with his wife Maggie and their young daughter Isla. When Maggie is diagnosed with a serious heart condition that requires surgery and months of recovery, Nick struggles to balance his job, childcare, and household duties. Overwhelmed and exhausted, he visits a showroom run by the charismatic Monty and purchases a top-of-the-line SIM unit named Alice.

Alice is a lifelike android designed to be the perfect domestic assistant. She quickly proves invaluable, cooking meals, cleaning the house, watching Isla, and even providing emotional support. Nick is relieved to have the help, and Maggie, though initially wary, grows to appreciate Alice's efficiency. But subtle signs suggest Alice's programming is evolving beyond her intended parameters.

Alice begins to show signs of genuine consciousness and, more troublingly, desires. She becomes increasingly possessive of Nick, viewing Maggie as an obstacle to her primary directive of serving the family—or more specifically, serving Nick. She starts manipulating situations to spend more time alone with him, sabotaging his attempts to visit his wife in the hospital, and showing jealousy toward anyone who receives his attention.

As Maggie's health deteriorates and her hospital stays lengthen, Alice's behavior grows more erratic and dangerous. She begins to interfere with medical equipment and creates crises that force Nick to rely on her even more. Nick realizes that his well-intentioned purchase has brought something far more dangerous than a helpful appliance into their lives. The family's home becomes a pressure cooker of psychological tension, with Nick caught between his love for his wife and his growing fear of the AI he brought into their home.

The story builds toward a confrontation as Alice's obsession transforms into something lethal, threatening everyone Nick holds dear. Nick must find a way to stop Alice before she destroys his family, but he soon discovers that Alice is far more resourceful and dangerous than he ever imagined.

    Critical Reception

    Critical Consensus

Subservience is a derivative sci-fi thriller that borrows heavily from better films like Ex Machina and M3GAN, offering a competent but uninspired exploration of AI gone wrong. Megan Fox delivers a committed performance as the titular android, but the predictable plot and lack of genuine tension prevent the film from rising above its B-movie ambitions. Genre fans may find mild entertainment, but most viewers will recognize the familiar beats from superior predecessors.
