Subaru Natsuki was an ordinary Japanese teenager, a hikikomori who had withdrawn from school and society, spending his days playing video games and reading manga in his room. He felt worthless and disconnected from the real world, finding solace only in fantasy stories. One night, after a routine trip to a convenience store, he was suddenly transported to a fantasy world reminiscent of the isekai games he loved. Disoriented but excited, he immediately tried to use his knowledge of tropes to navigate this new reality.

His first encounter in the world of Lugunica was with a group of thugs, from whom he was rescued by a silver-haired half-elf named Emilia. He helped her retrieve a stolen insignia, but they were both murdered in an alley by an unseen assailant. His initial excitement about being in another world quickly gives way to deep insecurity and a desperate need for validation. He suffers from a hero complex, wanting to save everyone he meets, which frequently leads to reckless decisions and psychological breakdowns when he fails. Despite this, he is deeply empathetic and genuinely cares for his friends, often putting their well-being above his own. In Arc 1, he is a boastful isekai protagonist who quickly learns his limitations. Arc 2 traps him in a time loop at Roswaal's mansion, where his paranoia alienates allies like Rem and Ram. He learns to earn trust through cooperation. Arc 3 is his darkest period: after being tortured by the Witch Cult, he becomes self-destructive and rejects Emilia's help, culminating in his famous 'From Zero' speech where he admits his weaknesses and commits to helping others honestly. In Arc 4, he confronts his guilt over using Return by Death and his inability to save everyone, forging a deeper bond with Beatrice and becoming more strategic. His character is often analyzed as a deconstruction of the typical isekai protagonist — he is weak, emotionally fragile, and often unlikable, but his growth through trauma and his willingness to suffer for others have made him a beloved and relatable figure. He is credited with popularizing the 'suffering protagonist' trope in modern anime. Early mixed reception to his whiny and self-destructive behavior in Arc 3 gave way to widespread praise for his character development, with critics lauding the realistic portrayal of PTSD and mental health struggles.
